The Adventure Begins
The Good The Bad and The Ugly
Well, this is the best way to kick off this new adventure that I can think of. I should put a disclaimer here and admit I do collect comics and read them, but all of them are snug in their bags and boards in their long box beds. We've all read some awesome comics and then we've gone and read some that were so bad they became good. In this debut post, we'll explore some that are all over the place and some that got me wondering how they got past the idea stage and were allowed to be published. Part of my problem is I came into comics way later than most people so there's a lot I've missed because as a kid I just couldn't afford to read comics. I knew about them, and I've read a few but as far as collecting, that came way later when I needed a new hobby and stumbled onto my addiction. It's a hobby that I enjoy and I have enough comics that I can pull out the worst of the worst, or at least the marginally bad.
Huntress Vol 2 1-4
The artwork here is awful. Way too dark and looks as if it were an afterthought and then you get into the actual plot of the story which is about a vigilante who could be a female batman or something, she goes after the mob and then it all kinda blurs together in a mess of a comic that has a lot of potential yet fails to live up to anything noteworthy. This came from DC mind you and I get what they were going for but the art takes away from enjoying the comic. Helen has an interesting back story and this could have been a great story about Huntress going after the mob and then it all goes to hell. There's a series before this is far more interesting and features way way better artwork.
The Rise Of Arsenal
Oh, man! I have heard stories about this comic so I set out to find all four issues just to see if this was the worst comic ever created. This one gets so much hate and I guess it's justified when you look at it in all of its over the top glory. I swear this is so bad it's good. It's just unapologetic in its drama and awfulness. As I read this I kept thinking when is this rise going to happen? All I've seen so far is a guy lose everything, and slide into a pit of despair. He loses his arm, his daughter gets killed and then he talks to a dead cat who he thinks is his dead daughter. Did I fail to mention he's tripping when he sees this? Issue three is where things go off the rails but then things begin to straighten out for our boy Arsenal or do they? If you call getting thrown into rehab by your so-called friends better then okay.
I enjoyed this way more than I should have because it's just so well drawn but someone at DC clearly dropped the ball when they agreed to release this. Maybe they were trying to be edgy by putting it out, but it's clearly not a comic for kids, and to be honest, it's really not good for anyone but the dialogue is so bad you can't help but laugh.
Rise Of Arsenal is one of those books that not everyone will enjoy especially when you get to issue three. It's where the wheels come off and you see the dark side of comic book characters who are clearly going through some serious stuff. People can relate though and the addiction and the overall despair this guy feels is justified but did the book really have to be so dark? Yeah, it did, and they went somewhere no comic should go. Yeah, you should read this.
El Diablo
I picked up the entire series for about 15 bucks and I can't really say if it was worth it. Issue one was a great intro to a character I'd never heard of but the rest of the series is mostly hit and miss. El Diablo faces crack dealers, he faces all sorts of stuff you would expect a comic book character of this type to face. That's the problem with the bulk of this comic. They keep him tied into his neighborhood fighting for the things he should yet the stories sometimes come off as dated when you read them now. I like a lot of these arcs but I can also see why this only lasted sixteen issues. When El Diablo helped the guy whose brother died crossing the border you can't help but wonder where the comic could go next. It's clear he's not an A-lister, but as a C or D level hero you may have some fun with these books and you can get them fairly cheap.
El Diablo is one of those comics that exist in my collection that I've read, and probably won't read again or who knows when I get tired of those good comics I'll pull these out just to remind myself why the nineties were such a bad year for comics. It wasn't just a DC problem, it was bad everywhere, but these just happened to be some of the comics I read this week and they were just not that good. Can we also mention that El Diablo's costume is kind of stupid looking? It is, just stupid and he's such a boring guy that you like it when he gets punched in the face. There was an issue where it looked like he got killed in a drive-by and I was okay with that. It would have ended the comic prematurely but hey, at least there'd be no more El Diablo.
So that's my debut comic post. Leave a comment and let me know what you think. Should I explore more bad comics or just review a bit of everything? Until next time keep reading and have a day.
