Batman Dark Detective #1

When you get a classic team of comic book writers to return to a series there's always high hopes mixed in with a little fear. Being a newer comic book fan I haven't yet read the Englehart run on Detective Comics, but I did manage to find this limited series pretty cheap. Being a Batman fan, I had to check it out because the cover of issue one has got to be one of my favorite Batman covers. In this issue we see that The Joker is running for Governor and his slogan is simple, but direct. Vote for me or die. The reveal happens at a party where another candidate is announcing his run, but of course it doesn't go according to plan. It's a simple yet effective set up that allows you to become invested in the story. We all know of the history between the bat and The Joker and how they need each other. When Batman gives chase you know how it's going to end. The Joker gets away of course and then we see Two Face on the last page which gives you an idea of where this story could go.

While there's nothing here that's revolutionary it's an interesting story that shows great promise. Solid dialogue, and the art here is beautiful. It has that classic feel which enhances the story quite a bit. The Joker takes center stage as he should. He's a villian that brings out the best in Batman and his motives here are clear and he's not asking people to support his campain or even vote for him. He's telling them they are. These are rich people who have more money than they know what to do with so why not fund the Joker's campaign. As govenor, how bad could he be? If you're a fan of the Joker this is a must read and not just because of the Joker. This the return of Englehart and the crew that worked on those early issues. While I may not have read those, I have read this and loved it. Any comic that features the Batman and Joker have my attention and this is one to check out.
