Bad Mother #1
Bad Mother #1 5/5 stars
Recently in my pull I've stumbled onto a comic publisher called AWA Upshot and let me tell you something, I am impressed by these guys. If I see one of their titles I end up putting it in my pull becasue it's going to be good. Bad Mother is a new limited series written by Christa Faust, Mike Deodato Jr doing the art and cover and the colors are done by Lee Loughridge, oh and Dezi Sienty did the letters. This is not your typical superhero comic nor is it a comic that features the same tired ideas. In order to make a comic great you need a great story. Sure, the art here compliments the story well, but without a great story there's no reason to keep reading a comic. April Walters is a mother who is simply existing until two key things happen. The first is a robbery that ends up with a tragic ending and then, her daughter is kidnapped. The lead character is a wife and mother who is now facing one of the most terrifying things that can happen to a parent and it's interesting how someone like this will deal with what's happening.
It's a great premise that shows us a character you don't see in comics. It's that pulpy, outside the box thinking that makes this so good. You have a woman who has just survived a robbery and is now faced with something far worse. When someone hurts yourr kid your first instinct is to make them pay but what happens is April stumbles onto another murder but in an interesting twist, her daughter is now missing and the murder she thought she saw no longer exists which the cop just chalks up to the traumatic experience of seeing someone get shot. We know she's not crazy though, and the interesting thing here is how this is all going to play out, and how it's all connected. This is a woman who lives in the suburbs with a husband who's off in a business trip somewhere and her daughter has just vanished.
For a first issue it's well written and allows the reader to become hooked in the story. When it ends, you know you're going to read all five issues just to see how it all plays out. How far will April go to save her daughter because we all know that once this is over it's going to affect everything around her. No one messes with your kids, but how far will someone go to save them, to protect them. As the story progresses it's going to be interesting to see how it all advances forward. With such a great issue it's going to be interesting to see just how well it ends.
