Dracula Revisited

Cult Of Dracula #1

I saw the cover of this at Stuff Genie Emporium and was instantly intrigued. The cover alone was enough for me to snag it up and put it in with my pulll and as I sat down to read it I was instantly hooked. What happpens when you revisit Bram's famous story and insert the Manson family into it? The anwer is, you get Cult of Dracula and it's an interesting take on vampire tale that works. The Stoker tale is updated to give it a more modern feel and the characters are all characters from the book which is interesting and risky. It's risky because if it's done wrong, you're going to have fans screaming for your head. No one wants characters they're familiar with misused or even updated. Cult of Dracula is already a comic that's taking risks while trying to get your attention. This is an indie comic so the trick here is to find your audience, and once you do that, you begin to gain a fan base. Does this book do that? It could if people would just seek it out and read it.

It's a solid first issue that sets up the story while maintaining a bit of mystery. The book opens with a murder in a church and then it switches to a shot of the same church and you can see that this is the same church where the murders occured in the opening pages. That's the hook that sets it all up. Later, we see Mina Murray as a reporter telling us about the Order Of The Dragon which is the cult of Dracula or at least I think so. Not much information is given, but the set up, and the story alone are a good beginning that gives you a reason to continue reading. As a debut issue it's a decent read but the artwork is a bit of a letdown. It's not terrible, but at times the characters look blocky, or just plain weird. It's not a deal breaker, but let's hope in future issues it gets better.

Second Sight Publishing is someone I've never heard of before, but if they continue to put out books like these, I'll be reading a lot more of their books. Cult Of Dracula is a horror comic that shows promise. It features characters we know and places them in modern times. There's also that feeling that we know how this is all going to end but there are a lot of pieces at play and it'll be interesting to see where it all goes. Bonus points are also issued at the price of the comic. At a mere 2.99 it's not an expensive book which is a good thing when you're trying to break out and get people into your work. Cult Of Dracula may be an indie comic but it's not a bad one. So many other indies fall into the trap of awful or just plain mediocre titles but this one shows promis and I can't wait to see what they come up with next.  5/5 stars
