Wait, Am I reading the wrong comic??
Future State Suicide Squad #1
I'm a fan of Suicide Squad so when I saw all the relates titles foe Future State listed I was kind of excited about a future glimpse of one of my favorite titles. When we were given a new direction for the Squad it was okay, maybe there were a few problems with the overall run, yet I still would give it solid B maybe even a C. Now, with these Future State issues we're seeing a lot of crap. I wanted to like all of these, but let's be clear here and admit that the Future State has some problems but it's really trying to entice fans into buying books that are all a part of some event and may not even have any impact on the DC Universe. Now we have Suicide Squad which again is a two issue run so there's no time for buidup or a reason for any of this to matter. It's a good comic though right?
When you call a comic Suicide Squad you expect there to be an actual Suicide Squad somewhere. It's there on the cover, but as you read it, confusion settles in. Wait, who is the Justice Squad and who are all of these generic superheroes? It's like Dollar General had a sale on toys and this was the end result. You have a fake Batman, a fake Aquaman, and even a fake Wonderwoman. I guess in the future all the real superheroes were too busy to form a team so this was the best they could do. In reality, it's Amanda Waller leading her own twisted version of The Justice League and you even have a Superman clone because why not? While the story itself is simply okay, it's just a small teaser for the upcoming Crime Syndicate coming in March. That alone is worth the price of this book. While it's all pretty much a set up for things to come it's not terrible. The art here is decent but most of all you get Suicide Squad Vs Justice Squad next issue. So, in theory, this isn't a Suicide Squad story at all. yet I'm not mad.
Next story we have the Black Adam which I know nothing about. Sorry, I know that will probably get a lot of boos thrown my way but all I can do is promise to do better next time. The story isn't all that great, but you do get to see the Gold Beetle which I guess is pretty cool. As far as stories go. it's exactly the kind of filler stuff you would expect. It's not treading any new ground and could be virtually any superhero story with any random character. That's been the problem with the Future State Stuff. You have some really great issues with some filler. Some of these characters don't even need to be included but they are just to add more pages which amounts to a higher cover price. Suicide Squad on it's own was okay, but the reason for it even existing is to set up events for a new comic. If you aren't reading this then what's going to happen in March? How is this all going to play out?
In a way. I wish some of these titles were given more issues. Suicide Squad has a lot of interesting ideas that all kind of fly by. There's no room to care about who these characters are or even where they come from which doesn't bode well for a comic that's supposed to show us the after effects of Death Metal. Maybe it was all planned out but the execution at times is questionable. I have to ask myself, if this were a new series would I read it? I think I would. You have Amanda Waller and a twisted version of The Justice League fighting the things that Amanda Waller wants them to fight. The brain bombs are still in play which is all a part of whar makes the team so good. They may not like each other, but they have to work together or kaboom. So, if you're interested in what's arriving later when we leave the future this is a decent read. 6 out of 10
