The Future Is Here
DC Future State
When I heard about the new DC event called Future Shock I wasn't all that interested. Think about it for a second and you'll see why the timing of this was wrong. The event itself is a two month event that spreads over a bunch of titles. Some are just standard issues while some feature different stories and heroes. It's ambtious is hell and the idea here is to entice fans to read some, or all of these books. We're in the middle of a pandemic so the timing itself is kind of off. A lot of people aren't working so the last thing they're buying is comic books. Then you have people like me who are just suckered into buying them. There were just a couple of issues I wanted to check out, but then I realized that I may want to read them all later and the trades are going to be just as expensive as the singular books themselves. The price of the books vary. They go from seven-ninety nine all the way to three-ninety nine. The issues are mostly two issues with some going four. In order to collect them all you're going to add a lof to your current pull list. Do you really want to spend all that cash on mediocre books? That's the reason behind this new blog.
It's really just my take on the whole Future State event from the standpoint of objectivity. So far, the event has been more hit than miss. The books I was most excited about turned out to be not so good and the books I was expecting to be terrible were really good. Going forward I will review three books and hopefully you can still pick some of these up if you haven't already. Some of the titles are selling out as soon as they hit shelves which means you're now going into second printings. That's another thing that surprised me. As a comic reader I'm alwasy skeptical of events and have yet to finish the X Of Swords event from Marvel. When you collect the individual issues there's always that feeling of why did I let them sucker me in again? In the end, I always swear I won't do it again, but I always do. I'm not the only one.
So, the first impression from the future is that it's a very dark and bleak place. Heroes we know are now replaced with new faces. In this future we find that being a super hero isn't always a good thing and there's an orginization hell bent on taking them down. It's not a happy future at all and while it all may seem doom and gloom, there are some bright spots here and there. I wasn't sure what I expected from DC and I think the idea itself is refreshing for the company, not all comic fans will feel this warm glow of happiness as they read thsse books. When you try something this big there's bound to be someone who will whine and cry about it. As fans, we don't like change when it comes to iconic characters. Initially, I was not into the Future State concept at all. Batman has always been Bruce Wayne and if you're going to present a new heir to the throne doesn't it make sense to pass the torch to Damien?
Over the next few monthhs we'll explore the future together. The good, the bad, and the downright ugly. I'm not even going to review these in order because there's so many. Seriously, there are a lot of books coming out so I'm just going to do a batch together and see which ones are worth your hard earned cash, and which ones should be just forgotten. Some of my picks may surprise you while some probably won't but I will be fair, and read each one even if it feels like I should be sawing at my wrists with a butter knife. Okay, with that said, I am signing off now and will see you soon with my first review of the Future State Books.
